Opportunity | Excellence in Philippine Studies/ Filipinx Diaspora Studies Writing and Research-Creation

The Philippine Studies Group invites course directors and teaching assistants to nominate exceptional student papers and research-creation outputs (such as creative works) for the Excellence in Philippine Studies/Filipinx Diaspora Studies Writing and Research-Creation Awards. A small monetary award (C$300) is available for one award recipient per category.
The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, 22 November 2023 at 16:00 EST.
Criteria for nominations:
For PhD Papers:
- The submission should be an original and unrevised version of a term paper or creative project
- It should have a substantive focus related to the Philippines or the Filipino/a/ix Diaspora
- It should have been submitted for a York university class or requirement in the 2022–23 or Fall 2023 academic years
- It should not have been published or recognized elsewhere prior to submission
For PhD Dissertations:
- The submission should be an original and unrevised version of a PhD dissertation
- It should have a substantive focus related to the Philippines or the Filipino/a/ix Diaspora
- It should have been successfully defended in the 2022–23 and Fall 2023 academic year
For Research-Creation:
- The submission should be an original creative or expressive work (including, but not limited to visual art, new media works, screenplays, scripts, dance, musical compositions, etc.)
- It should include a 350-word statement written by the student, which describes the work’s connection to the Philippines or the Filipino/a/x Diaspora.
- It should have been submitted for a York University class or requirement in the 2022–23 or Fall 2023 academic years
Nominators can email their submission to philippinestudiesgroup@yorku.ca. Submissions must include:
- Name, department and email of the nominator
- The student’s name, programme, year of study and email address
- The nominator’s 250-word description justifying the submission
- For paper submissions, a PDF scan of the student’s unrevised essay with the marker’s original comments on the essay included
- For research-creation submissions, please submit high-quality digital documentation in a shared folder. Provide the link in the submission document.

Past Opportunities:
Graduate Student / Postdoctoral Fellow Research Stipend (Deadline: 6 February 2023)
Requirements: A brief research proposal, indicating the research questions being examined, the methods and methodologies being used, and research plans. Each applicant should also provide a budget breakdown indicating travel costs (including hotel and airfare), participant honoraria, etc.
At least three awards, up to $ 8,000 each.
Language Study Subsidy (Deadline: 6 February 2023)
Requirements: A letter from the applicant indicating which Philippine language they want to study, how learning this language will contribute to their research plans, and a budget indicating total costs of language instruction and, if relevant, travel costs (if applicant will be traveling to the Philippines to learn the language).
Two awards, up to $4,500 each.

Requirements: Nomination packages should include a one paragraph summary of the paper/dissertation and a PDF copy of the paper or PhD dissertation.
