Sebastian Yuxi Zhao
I am a doctoral student of Communication and Culture at York University with an MA in Communication from the University of Ottawa and a BA in the same field from Simon Fraser University.
My doctoral research project will be a digital ethnographic study on the online consumption pattern of new Chinese immigrants in Canada and its influences on their identity negotiation between Canadian and Chinese cultures, especially during the global pandemic. I will focus on YouTube and the Chinese video-sharing website Bilibili as the main subjects. Some topics I would like to discuss include the anti-racism discrimination during the pandemic, the intercultural experiences of new immigrants, and how gender and city of origin affect immigrants’ adaptation.
In Vancouver, I have worked as a content writer for Periphery Digital since 2017. I have previously worked as a news writer and editor in Chinese for one of the largest news platforms VanPeople.com.
