Derek Verbakel is a doctoral student in the Department of Politics at York University. His doctoral project examines how militarisms in India and Israel are in significant ways linked and co-produced. Focusing particularly on the broadening and deepening of ‘security’-related interactions in/between India and Israel since 2014, the project explores how discursive and material bonds—such as praise of one another’s anti-‘terrorism’ tactics and a substantial arms trade—have been constitutive of transnational configurations of militarism. The aim is to illuminate how these processes, sets of relations, and materialities are implicated in the legitimation and exercise of organized state violence in specific contexts.
Prior to beginning at York in 2018, Derek worked for several years in London and New Delhi in the NGO and think-tank sectors on issues related to conflict, (in)security and development in the Middle East and South Asia. He also holds an MSc in International Politics from SOAS, University of London.
