Professor Oikawa teaches and researches in the areas of critical race studies, gender, and cultural studies. She is currently researching Japanese Canadians' relationship to colonialism in Canada, the historical construction of relational racial formations in Canada, and coalition building between racialized communities in Canada. She also conducts research on the Internment of Japanese Canadians. She has held visiting positions at the Department of Global and International Relations, Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan and the International Research Institute, Faculty of International Studies, Meiji Gakuin University, Yokohama, Japan.
