For my PhD I am examining how neoliberal restructuring in and of the Manila city-region has been influenced by political and economic elites, inherited institutional legacies, and local history; how the outcome of this process shaped, and was shaped by, the geographically- and sectorally-uneven insertion of the Philippines and of Manila into the global economy; and finally, how these two processes have reconfigured both urban spaces in Manila as well as its place within the global economy.

Keywords: Urban political economy; property development; capitalist class trans/formations; political ecology of disaster risk; defining and claiming new urban commons; Manila; Philippines
