trace press and Tam Fam Lit Jam warmly invite you to Root, Branch, Driftwood, a celebration of Tamil poetry, translation and transcreation.
Register to attend at this link. A zoom link will be emailed to you on the morning of 22 April.
Root, Branch, Driftwood is the culmination of two series of workshops developed by Nedra Rodrigo (Humanities) and Geetha Sukumaran (Humanities) for trace: translating [x] TAMIL, where we engaged participants in conversations on decolonial, anti-racist and feminist translation practices; discussed effects of terrain, movement, labour, and resistance on Tamil literary cultures; explored texts that brought the precolonial and the present into conversation; and played with language through collaborative translations, literary experimentation and trans-creations. Following decolonial, anti-racist and feminist practices in Tamil–English literary translation, we encouraged intergenerational experimentation and trans-creation, providing transliterations and bridge translations for those not fluent in Tamil, but who are nonetheless moulded by the language.
These workshops brought together young Tamil poets-translators to engage with the Tamil language, its poetry, and the pleasures and politics of translation. The result is a collection of compelling and nuanced poems, translations and reflections that move beyond land, language and identity. The anthology will be published by trace press in 2023-24.
Our bilingual reading event, hosted by Tam Fam Lit Jam, will give you a small sampling of the wonders to come. We hope you will join us, and invite you to share the event with anyone interested.
