Malayalee migrants from Kerala, India, are one of the fastest growing ethnolinguistic group in Canada. This talk examines the experiences of Malayalee international students in the GTA. This group faces multiple challenges, including multi-level financial struggles, emotional and stress issues, personality changes, lack of support system, problems with housing and accommodation, and racism from fellow Indians, other racialized groups, and Canadians.
Lijo Lal is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Kerala who received a MITACS fellowship to conduct fieldwork in Toronto. The talk is based on three months of qualitative field research and secondary sources.
