This seminar will focus on the need for Canada, and Ontario in particular, to diversify trade with Southeast Asian countries, many of whom have growing middle-class populations and a shared interest in ensuring free trade flows in the Indo-Pacific region.

SPEAKERS:

Jonathan T. Fried, Senior Advisor, Albright Stonebridge Group and Bennett Jones; Senior Associate, Center for Strategic and International Studies

Before retiring from government in 2020, Mr. Fried’s distinguished diplomatic career for Canada spanned law, economics, and trade. From 2017 to early 2020, he was the Personal Representative of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the G20. Previously, Mr. Fried served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO; Ambassador to Japan; Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean at the IMF; Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister; Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for the Department of Finance and Canada’s G7 and G20 Finance Deputy. He was formerly Canada’s Chief Negotiator on China’s WTO accession; chief counsel for NAFTA; and Counsellor for Congressional and Legal Affairs at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC. Mr. Fried received his B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Toronto, and LL.M. from Columbia University.

Jonathan Berkshire Miller, Director, Council on International Policy

Jonathan is an international affairs professional with expertise on security, defense and geo-economic issues in the Indo-Pacific. He has held a variety of positions in the private and public sector. Currently, he is a senior fellow with the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). He is also director and senior fellow of the Indo-Pacific program at the Ottawa-based Macdonald Laurier Institute, Senior Fellow on East Asia for the Tokyo-based Asian Forum Japan and the Director and co-founder of the Council on International Policy. He also holds appointments as Canada’s ASEAN Regional Forum Expert and Eminent Person (EEP) and as a Responsible Leader for the BMW Foundation.

Jonathan is a regular contributor to several journals, magazines and newspapers on Asia-Pacific security issues including The Economist Intelligence Unit, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy and Nikkei Asian Review. He has also published widely in other outlets including Forbes, Newsweek Japan, the Globe and Mail, the World Affairs Journal, the Japan Times, the Mainichi Shimbun, the ASAN Forum, Jane’s Intelligence Review and Global Asia. Miller has been interviewed and quoted on regional security issues across a wide range of media including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg, Le Monde, Nikkei, the Japan Times, Asahi Shimbun, the Voice of America, the Globe and Mail, CBC, CTV and ABC news.

Kevin Sullivan, Senior Manager, Export Development Canada

Kevin Sullivan joined EDC in 2012 and has more than 15 years of international finance, trade, and business development experience. Kevin currently contributes as Senior Manager – Corporate Accounts where he works closely with high growth Canadian exporters providing guidance on trade finance, risk mitigation and market expansion strategies.

Prior to joining EDC, Kevin lived and worked in Asia for six years and has a keen interest in global supply chains.
Kevin holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from St. Francis Xavier University and École Supérieure de Commerce d’Amiens, France and is fluent in French and Mandarin.
