Born in Moscow, Russia, Sergei earned his BA and MA degrees in International Relations at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and a PhD in History at the Institute for the Study of the USA and Canada, Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His areas of academic interest include Russian and Eurasian politics, Afghanistan’s relations with Central and South Asia, political economy of post-communism, Russian-American relations. He is the Director of the South and Central Asia Project at YCAR.
